Russia’s Security Council Warns Armenia: Moscow Predicts Scenarios Ahead for Yerevan

The Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Alexei Shevtsov, has stated that Armenia’s possible accession to the European Union could lead to a loss of about 23% in the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). According to the official, this figure has been derived from more conservative and cautious calculations. The message disseminated by the staff of the Russian Security Council indicates that such developments could pose serious challenges to Armenia’s economic stability.

Economic negative forecasts also include a significant contraction in the labor market, estimated at around 10.5 percentage points, as well as a sharp acceleration in inflation rates, exceeding 22 percentage points. Shevtsov asserted that declining trends are also anticipated in the consumer market; internal consumption may decrease by more than 20% from current levels, which will directly affect the living standards of the population.

The Russian official also drew attention to expected changes in the energy market. According to the data he presented, in the event of joining the European Union, a consistent increase in natural gas and other energy prices is predicted. These factors, combined with other economic indicators, could lead to a significant deterioration of the internal economic environment in the country.
