EU Ready to Impose Sanctions on Georgia, Kallas
The European Union has expressed its readiness to impose sanctions against Georgia due to actions against independent media and the opposition. According to the head of European diplomacy, Kaia Kallas, one member state is obstructing the decision to impose sanctions.
At a press conference following the meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kallas noted that there is a general consensus on the sanctions issue, with 26 states in favor and only one against.
The senior diplomat emphasized the need to enhance cooperation with the Georgian people to demonstrate Europe's goodwill. At the same time, Kallas pointed out the importance of sending clear signals to the Georgian government that their adopted direction contradicts European values.
She added that Georgia has shown no signs of returning to democratic principles, and this trajectory needs to change. In her view, a concrete proof of the Georgian authorities' willingness to cooperate could be real participation in the dialogue on human rights.
