Pashinyan Issues Statement

We highly value the activity of civil society in Armenia, and of course, it is difficult to overstate the role of civil society in our reality, especially under the conditions of our ideological and democratic perceptions. This was stated by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during his speech at the 8th bilateral meeting of the Armenia-EU Civil Society Platform.

Pashinyan noted that while we have made significant progress in the development of democracy and the economy of the state since the 2018 popular, non-violent, Velvet Revolution, we are faced with serious problems, and addressing these serious problems is among our top priorities. However, when seeking solutions to these issues, we also encounter seemingly overlooked problems.

“Perhaps the biggest criticism directed at our government and political majority since the 2018 revolution is that, while we view the expectation of justice as one of the main agendas of the revolution, we have still not managed to achieve successes in the field of justice in Armenia that could be considered good or sufficient. There is truth in this, but when we want to understand the problem, we face a question that may seem simplistic at first glance: what is justice, and what is judicial justice?” the Prime Minister said.

According to him, lawyers see justice as one thing, while politicians see it as another. “Generally, the aspects related to justice are twofold, and usually, one side loses and the other wins. How can we reach a situation where both the loser and the winner accept what happened as justice and judicial justice?” he concluded.
