The War Involving Iran Could Increase Extreme Poverty
The UN Development Programme has published a new report indicating that a potential war involving Iran could push an additional 32 million people into extreme poverty worldwide. According to experts' forecasts, the economic repercussions will particularly impact developing countries that are more sensitive to fluctuations in global markets.
UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner commented on the situation, stressing that such conflicts reverse global development processes. He argued that even a swift cessation of military actions cannot eliminate the already established negative trends. The long-term consequences will be especially noticeable in low-income countries, where a large portion of the population may lose access to means necessary for survival.
The report emphasizes that the world is currently under the influence of a "triple shock" involving energy and food crises accompanied by a sharp decline in economic growth rates. Military actions not only halt the results of international development programs but also create an unequal economic burden across different regions.
