Venezuela Considered Purchasing $400 Million Missiles from Iran
Venezuelan authorities discussed the possibility of acquiring ballistic missile systems worth over $400 million from Iran in 2020. This was reported by Politico, citing an internal memorandum from the country’s Ministry of Defense.
The document, dated January 17, states that the intended missiles could reach U.S. territory and were planned to be deployed on Venezuela's military vessels. According to the same source, the memorandum also outlines financing mechanisms through state-owned enterprises.
According to the publication, the deal was never executed due to pressure from the U.S. administration, led at the time by Donald Trump. Former U.S. Special Representative Elliott Abrams noted that Washington had sent a clear signal that such a move was unacceptable.
As a result, the process was halted without the deal being finalized.
