Rutte Reveals Details of His Meeting with Trump
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with NATO during a closed-door meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. “He is clearly unhappy with many NATO allies, and I understand his point of view,” Rutte stated after the meeting that lasted more than two hours at the White House, appearing on CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper."
“This was a very candid and open discussion, but also a conversation between two good friends,” he added.
Rutte spoke hours after White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt referenced Trump's remarks about NATO, saying, “They were tested, and they failed” during the war in Iran. Several NATO countries have refused to support the U.S. military campaign against Iran, denying American military aircraft the use of their airspace or rejecting the deployment of naval vessels to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz for oil tankers.
