Iran Establishes New Rules for Vessels Transiting the Strait of Hormuz
The Iranian authorities have announced that permission to transit the Strait of Hormuz will only be granted to 'non-hostile' vessels that coordinate their routes with Tehran in advance. This is reported by the Financial Times, citing a letter from the Iranian Foreign Ministry sent to member countries of the International Maritime Organization.
The letter specifically states that Iran has taken measures to prevent 'hostile actions' by 'aggressors and their supporters' through the strait. According to the source, vessels associated with the United States, Israel, and other parties to the conflict will not be allowed to pass through the strait.
At the same time, Tehran has indicated that 'non-hostile' vessels can only utilize the strait upon prior agreement with Iran.
According to India Today, since the outbreak of war, Iran has targeted around 20 vessels attempting to transit the strait without permission. The International Maritime Organization reports that approximately 2,000 vessels remain in the waters near the Strait of Hormuz at this time.
