The European Union Suspends Visa-Free Regime for Georgia
The European Union has suspended the visa-free regime for citizens of Georgia holding diplomatic, service, and official passports. This was announced by the press service of the European Commission.
The decision was made on the grounds that Georgia has violated a number of obligations assumed within the framework of the visa-free regime. The EU's statement indicates that actions taken by the Georgian authorities starting from October 2024 have negatively impacted the situation in the country.
Specifically, it mentions pressures on protests, opposition political figures, and independent media, which, according to the European Commission, have led to violations of fundamental rights and international legal norms. Additionally, Georgia has failed to align its policies with the EU's visa policy.
Restrictions are set to be implemented until March 6, 2027. If the Georgian authorities do not resolve governance and rule of law issues during this period, the European Commission may extend the measures by another two years.
