Tehran Threatens to Close the Strait of Hormuz

Iran is capable of closing the Strait of Hormuz in a short timeframe if necessary, stated Alireza Tangsiri, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' naval forces. He emphasized that if the circumstances warrant such a move, the armed forces are prepared to take immediate action. The commander’s statement was released by the IRIB state broadcaster.

According to Fars news agency, today a section of the strait will be closed for several hours due to naval exercises. It is noted that the restriction will be temporary.

Earlier, Reuters reported that the U.S. Department of Defense is developing options for a long-term military campaign against Iran in case negotiations regarding the nuclear program fail. The publication indicated that the planned operations might not only involve nuclear facilities but also state and security institutions. In the United States, the risks of potential retaliatory measures are also being considered.

Today, a second round of negotiations between Iran and the United States on nuclear issues took place in Geneva at the Omani diplomatic mission, during which the details of sanctions relief were also discussed.
