Peskov Calls for No Expectations of Sensation from Geneva
The Kremlin has urged the public not to expect any significant announcements following the first day of negotiations in Geneva. On February 17, Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President, clarified that the delegations will continue their work the following day, indicating that immediate results from the first round of talks are unlikely.
It is noteworthy that against the backdrop of diplomatic communications, Ukraine reported a large-scale attack that took place overnight. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in the morning of February 17 that Russia launched about 400 drones and 29 missiles during the night. He asserted that the strikes were aimed at energy facilities.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibihon accused Moscow of ignoring peace efforts and called on partners to tighten sanctions and provide military support to Kyiv. U.S. President Donald Trump also commented on the negotiation process, stating that Ukraine “needs to quickly sit down at the negotiating table.” For his part, Zelensky emphasized that Kyiv is utilizing all diplomatic avenues and has no intention of avoiding dialogue.
