European Parliament Disables AI Tools
The European Parliament has disabled several artificial intelligence tools on the devices provided to its members for security reasons. This was reported by Euractiv, referencing an internal electronic communication within the institution.
The restrictions pertain to the AI capabilities built into the devices, including text generation and virtual assistant functionalities. It was noted that an evaluation conducted by cybersecurity and personal data protection experts revealed that some functions utilize cloud services for task execution rather than local systems, which could pose a risk of data leakage.
Until a full clarification of the issue is achieved, it has been decided to keep these functionalities in a disabled state. Following a call from the Parliament's Chief Information Officer, members were also advised to disable non-essential AI features on their personal devices and limit access to neural networks for work emails and documents.
It is worth mentioning that in March 2024, the European Parliament adopted a law regulating the use of artificial intelligence, which sets limitations on certain high-risk applications and prohibits the use of biometric identification systems by law enforcement agencies.
