This Outcome Is Better Than Syria Splitting Into Eight Parts: Rubio
The U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that he missed the Munich meeting regarding Ukraine due to negotiations about Syria.
In response to a question about the situation in Syria, Rubio emphasized the necessity of respecting the recent agreement between the Syrian government and the Kurdish-led "Syrian Democratic Forces," acknowledging that it would be challenging.
“And there are other similar agreements they need to reach—with the Druze, the Bedouins, the Alawites, all the diverse elements of Syrian society. However, we believe that this outcome, as difficult as it may be, is much better than a Syria that would split into eight parts, with all sorts of fighting and all kinds of mass migration,” Rubio said.
The Munich conference is presented as one of the world’s leading forums for the discussion of international security issues; however, since 2022, the organizers have not invited representatives from Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that the conference has completely discredited itself, citing the leadership’s stance which has stopped inviting those presenting alternative viewpoints. More than 50 leaders participated in this year’s event.
