Measles Outbreak in North London
More than 60 children have contracted measles due to an outbreak in North London. Seven schools and one nursery in Enfield have reported cases of measles, with some children requiring hospitalization, according to the Sunday Times.
There are concerns that the outbreak is linked to low vaccination rates for the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine in the UK capital. Each infected person can potentially spread measles to up to 18 unvaccinated individuals. Dudu Sher-Aram, the Director of Health in Enfield, stated that the outbreak poses a serious threat, as there is fear it could lead to a much larger epidemic throughout London, especially among children.
He emphasized that London has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country, if not the very lowest. A public vaccination campaign for children is expected to begin next week in the UK, utilizing social media, YouTube ads, and radio spots to address the existing skepticism toward vaccinations.
