4400 Arrests: Immigration Detention Practices in the U.S. Remain Unchanged

U.S. courts have ruled more than 4,400 times that arrests made by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are illegal, yet this practice continues.

According to Reuters, citing an analysis of judicial data, federal judges across the country have issued at least 4,421 rulings since October declaring the detention of immigrants by ICE to be unlawful. Despite this, President Donald Trump’s administration persists in detaining individuals for extended periods as part of a campaign of mass deportations.

Since the beginning of Trump's administration, those detained have filed over 20,200 similar claims demanding their release. In at least 4,421 cases, more than 400 federal judges have determined that ICE unlawfully holds these individuals.

Against the backdrop of tightened immigration policies, the number of detainees in ICE facilities has reached 68,000, which is nearly 75% higher than it was when Trump took office last year. By the end of January, it was also revealed that ICE plans to convert 23 industrial warehouses into immigrant detention centers, which could house up to 80,000 people.
