I Do Not Convince Europe to Abandon Partnership with the US, Merz
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged EU countries not to abandon their partnership with the United States, despite the emerging disagreements in their relations.
“A chasm has opened up between Europe and the United States,” said Merz while speaking at the 62nd Munich Security Conference held in Germany. He pointed out that US Vice President J.D. Vance had “very openly stated” this at last year's Munich Security Conference.
Despite this, Merz is confident that the European Union should not abandon its partnership with the United States and that their relations need to be reconfigured.
“I do not agree with overly reflexive calls directed at Europe to abandon the United States as a partner… Such calls simply ignore the harsh geopolitical reality facing Europe and underestimate the potential that, despite all challenges, our partnership with the United States still holds,” Merz stated.
