Water Levels Rise in Lake Sevan, Algae Problem Remains, Minister Says

A positive update has been revealed: for the first time since 2017, Lake Sevan has recorded a rise in water levels. As of January, the lake's water level has increased by 1 cm. This announcement was made by Minister of Environment Hambartsum Matevosyan during a Q&A session with the Parliament regarding a comment by Civil Contract party member Sergey Bagratyan, who noted that while the lake has slightly less algae growth in 2024-2025, the issue remains.

When asked about measures being taken to address this problem by 2026, the Minister commented on water extraction from Lake Sevan, reminding that there is a directive from the Prime Minister to ensure that the legally defined water extraction limit, which is 170 million cubic meters, is not exceeded in 2026. He also mentioned that an operational group is working within the government to monitor compliance with these regulations.
