Trump May Break Trade Relations with Canada and Mexico: Bloomberg

U.S. President Donald Trump is secretly discussing the possibility of withdrawing from the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), according to Bloomberg, citing its sources.

“According to sources familiar with the matter, President Trump has asked his aides why he shouldn’t pull out of the agreement signed during his first term, although he has not explicitly stated his intention to do so,” the report noted.

Meanwhile, a White House source for Bloomberg referred to discussions about potential U.S. actions regarding the USMCA as “baseless speculation” ahead of the president's official announcement.

U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Grier’s office informed the agency that simply extending the 2019 terms does not align with America's national interests. Previously, Grier had stated that in light of the mandatory review of the Canada-Mexico Trade Agreement (USMCA) in 2026, Washington could change it or even withdraw from it.

Under the agreement, many goods are traded between the three countries without tariffs, provided that origin rules and other standards are maintained. The agreement came into effect in 2020 for a term of 16 years, with the possibility of extension.
