Altercation Erupts Among MPs in Turkish Parliament

An altercation broke out in the Turkish Parliament after lawmakers from the ruling party and the opposition clashed over the controversial appointment of an official in the Ministry of Justice as part of a cabinet reshuffle.

Opposition MPs attempted to obstruct Istanbul's Chief Public Prosecutor, Akin Gureliek, who was appointed to a high judicial position by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, from taking an oath in Parliament. As tensions escalated, lawmakers pushed each other, and some even struck blows.

In his role as Istanbul's Chief Public Prosecutor, Gureliek has presided over high-profile trials against several members of the main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), which the opposition has long condemned as politically motivated.

The former prosecutor was later seen taking an oath surrounded by ruling party lawmakers.
