Zelensky on the End of the War
During a meeting in Abu Dhabi between delegations from Ukraine, the USA, and Russia, topics were discussed regarding the control of the ceasefire and bringing the war to an end by summer.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared this information with journalists during a statement regarding the outcomes of the trilateral meeting held in Abu Dhabi. Zelensky noted that military representatives discussed mechanisms for monitoring a possible ceasefire regime between Ukraine and Russia, as well as the technical involvement of the United States in this process, should a political decision be made.
According to him, negotiations will continue in the United States, and a new trilateral meeting could take place within a week. Zelensky mentioned that for the first time, the USA proposed to arrange a meeting between Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams in the USA, possibly in Miami, and Ukraine confirmed its participation.
He also reported that work is underway to repatriate Ukrainian prisoners of war, stating that exchanges will continue and teams will work on that process.
Zelensky emphasized that the USA has again put forward an initiative to reduce tensions surrounding energy infrastructure. Ukraine has supported this proposal, but Russia has yet to express its agreement.
He stressed that the most complex issues remain unchanged, and Ukraine has reaffirmed its position on the Donbas, asserting that it considers this to be the most fair and reliable model. At the same time, it was mentioned that the American side has once again raised the idea of a “free economic zone” as a compromise.
Zelensky quoted the Ukrainian delegation's statement that Russia cannot sign bilateral agreements regarding Ukraine with the United States, and any provisions concerning Ukraine cannot contradict the Constitution and laws of the country.
He also noted that the American side presented a proposal to end the war by this summer and could exert pressure on the parties to adhere to that timeline.
