Russian-Ukrainian Peace Is Near: The New US Scenario
The United States aims to reach a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine by March. This issue has been discussed during meetings between representatives of Washington and Kyiv in Abu Dhabi, Reuters reports, citing its sources.
According to sources, the discussed plan includes a potential peace agreement that should be presented for a national referendum, after which presidential elections could be held in Ukraine. US and Ukrainian negotiators have noted that it would be more advisable to organize the voting in the near term.
According to the publication's interlocutors, the American side has informed its Ukrainian partners that accelerating the process is desirable, as Donald Trump is expected to focus on domestic political issues related to the November Congressional elections in the coming months.
At the same time, other sources from the agency consider these timelines unrealistic. They assess that legislative changes and at least a six-month preparatory phase will be necessary just for organizing the referendum and elections in Ukraine.
A significant obstacle remains the territorial issue. Russia insists on complete control over Donbas and has rejected the proposal to transfer the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant under US control.
