Avanesyan on the Health Status of Those Returned from Baku Prison
The surgery of Vagif Khachatryan was successful, and he is currently in the recovery phase. This was stated by Armenia's Minister of Health Anahit Avanesyan during a press briefing, where she addressed the health status of four Armenians who were returned from Azerbaijan on January 14.
The minister informed that their health condition is being closely monitored, and necessary medical assistance is being provided by the state. Regarding the health status of ten Armenians and one Russian citizen who returned from Nagorno-Karabakh, the minister noted that not all of them require medical assistance. For those in need, organizational measures have been undertaken and continue as required.
“I have not visited the citizens because there has not been an occasion, but I believe I will have an opportunity,” she added.
The minister did not specify how many individuals are currently in medical facilities, only mentioning that their condition is satisfactory, they have undergone examinations, and relevant actions will be organized for any ongoing issues in the near future.
It should be reminded that on January 14, 2026, the Republic of Azerbaijan transferred Davit Davtyan, Gevorg Sujyan, Vigen Euljekchyan, and Vagif Khachatryan to the Republic of Armenia.
Furthermore, Vagif Khachatryan was captured in July 2023 near the bridge of Hakari, while he was on his way to Armenia for medical treatment under the escort of the International Committee of the Red Cross. In late December 2025, it was reported that his health condition had deteriorated in Baku prison, and he was transferred to the hospital.
A few days ago, Minister of Labor and Social Issues Arsen Torosyan announced that ten Armenians and one Russian citizen residing in Azerbaijan have appealed to the relevant authorities in Azerbaijan and Armenia for their transfer to Armenia. These individuals have been moved to the Republic of Armenia, and according to the minister, the health status of the ten compatriots is satisfactory.
