Ferry Capsizes in the Philippines, 15 Dead
The death toll from the Philippine ferry disaster has reached 15, according to Wion TV, citing Philippine authorities.
The passenger and cargo ferry 'Trisha Kerstin 3' capsized last night approximately one nautical mile off the coast of Basilan province while en route from Zamboanga city to Jolo island in Sulu province.
The Philippine Coast Guard reported that there were 332 passengers and 27 crew members on board when the vessel apparently encountered technical difficulties and capsized in good weather.
Previously, reports had indicated thirteen fatalities resulting from the incident. “Officials stated that at least 316 people have been rescued so far, and search operations are ongoing for potential missing passengers,” the broadcaster reported.
Search and rescue operations near the shores of Basilan have involved Coast Guard and Navy ships, reconnaissance aircraft, a Philippine Air Force 'Black Hawk' helicopter, and local fishing boats.
