Cold Snap Hits Russia, New Record Set in Moscow at -38 Degrees

Last night, Moscow experienced the coldest temperatures since the beginning of the winter season, as reported by Mikhail Leus, a leading specialist from the Phobos weather center. According to data from the city's main meteorological station, VDNH, the minimum air temperature dropped to -17.3 degrees. Previously, the coldest day of winter was considered to be December 24, 2025, when temperatures fell to -16.4 degrees.

In various locations across the megacity, temperature readings fluctuated between -14.5 degrees (Balchug) and -20.8 degrees (Butovo). In New Moscow, specifically in Mikhailovskoye, the cold intensified, reaching a low of -26.4 degrees. In the Moscow region, thermometer readings were noted between -14.2 degrees (Solnechnogorsk) and -28.2 degrees (Chernogolovka), marking a record low for the current winter season in the region.

According to experts, temperatures in the Central Federal District have approached the -30 degree threshold. In the town of Vyazniki, located in Vladimir region, the thermometer dropped to -29.8 degrees. The coldest spot in European Russia has become the Vaya village in the Krasnovishersky district of Perm region, where the nighttime minimum temperature reached -38.2 degrees.
