Georgian Prime Minister Evaluates Impact of New Armenia–Azerbaijan Route
The announced alternative freight transit corridor will not threaten Georgia's transit potential, stated Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili. The presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Ilham Aliyev and Vahagn Khachaturyan, announced in Davos that freight currently transported through Georgian territory will be redirected directly along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border in the future.
“I would like to quote a simple statistic that confirms the alternative corridor does not pose a threat to Georgia. In the last five years, the volume of freight transported through the Middle Corridor has increased sevenfold. In this context, our only task is to maximize the use of our infrastructure to service this growing freight traffic. Given this increase, the alternative corridor will simply complement our transit function,” said Garibashvili.
