Sandu Supports the Unification of Moldova and Romania

The Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy and International Relations and a member of the Supreme Council of the breakaway Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (TMR), Andrei Safonov, believes that Moldovan President Maia Sandu's statement about her desire for unification with Romania is a test for the country's membership in NATO.

According to surveys, the majority of Moldovan citizens are against the republic's NATO membership, and more than half oppose joining Romania.

Earlier, in an interview with the British podcast The Rest Is Politics, Sandu stated that should a referendum be held, she would vote in favor of Moldova joining Romania, citing the complex international situation and the difficulties the republic faces as a sovereign state. “It is quite possible that a scheme is being played out, whereby yes, the unification of Moldova and Romania will be discussed, or more precisely, the incorporation of the Republic of Moldova by Romania. And at the same time, it may also be announced that Moldova is joining not only the European Union but also NATO,” Safonov said on the air of the “First Transnistria” television channel.

The Transnistria lawmaker recalled that this is not Sandu's first similar statement. According to him, she expressed her desire for the republic to unify with Romania several years ago.

“Now, against the backdrop of all the chaos the world has experienced, in the bad sense of the word, we are facing a clear phenomenon, a deception. We will see how others will react. If it works, then we can develop this idea. So far, it has not worked, and Sandu has faced serious criticism,” Safonov noted.
