Finland Issues Strong Statement Following Trump's Remarks
Members of the Finnish Parliament have suggested that Europe should distance itself from the United States following President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs in defense of Denmark's territorial integrity, reports Finnish newspaper Iltalehti.
"It has long been clear that Europe must rid itself of its strategic dependency. This concerns not only our old adversaries but, unfortunately, our traditional friends as well," wrote Atte Kaleva, a member of the National Coalition Party, on social media platform X.
According to fellow National Coalition Party member Jarnon Limnelli, Trump's threats indicate a drastic shift in the country’s foreign policy that is unacceptable to its allies. "This is not a trade issue; it is a game of geopolitical power," he emphasized.
Former Finnish Foreign Ministry official Henri Vanhanen noted that Trump's threats are particularly directed at countries sending soldiers or communication officers to Greenland. "I believe the sensitivity of this issue was known, but it seems difficult. Changes will be reviewed in the United States," he explained.
