EU Countries Have Started Discussing the Necessity of Dialogue with Russia: Fico

EU leaders, who previously prohibited communication with Russia, are now discussing the possibility of dialogue with the country, stated Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

"Just a few months ago, some EU member states did not allow me to travel to Moscow to commemorate the victory over fascism. Today, those same countries are talking about the necessity of dialogue with Russia and President Putin," he noted in a statement posted on the X social network.

Fico also praised his negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump, adding that American representatives show interest in Bratislava's stance, in contrast to the "Brussels parrots." Amid escalating tensions between Brussels and Washington, European politicians are increasingly addressing the topic of restoring relations with Moscow. The day before, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed hope for a rebalancing of relations with Russia, describing it as Europe's largest neighbor. The politician noted that restoring relations would signal the end of a difficult period for Germany and all of Europe.

Earlier, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov mentioned that the Russian leader is willing to restore ties with his Western counterparts. However, any potential conversation must seek to understand each other's positions rather than serve as a lecture.
