Localized Ceasefire Between Russia and Ukraine to Allow Repair of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant, Grossi Says
The agreed localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine will enable the commencement of repairs on the damaged backup power line of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), according to a statement from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Technicians from Ukraine's electricity grid operator are set to begin repair work in the coming days on the 330 kV line, which was damaged and disconnected following military operations on January 2, the statement noted.
At the same time, an IAEA team has traveled to the frontline to monitor the repair efforts. Currently, the ZNPP relies solely on its operational 750 kV main power line.
“The IAEA continues to work closely with both sides to ensure nuclear safety at the ZNPP and to prevent a nuclear accident during the conflict,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi in the statement.
