EU Responds to Trump's Tariffs on Greenland Issue
The implementation of tariffs by the U.S. on EU countries due to Greenland will disrupt transatlantic relations and create a risk of further deterioration, stated Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, on social media.
Trump announced in February the imposition of a 10% tariff on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, which will increase to 25% in June and remain in effect until the United States finalizes a deal to buy Greenland.
"The imposition of tariffs will disrupt transatlantic relations and pose a danger of a dangerous downturn. Europe will remain united, coordinated, and committed to protecting its sovereignty," the publication stated.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, Trump has repeatedly stated that the island should become part of the United States. The authorities of Denmark and Greenland have warned Washington against the annexation of the island, asserting that they expect respect for their territorial integrity.
