Emergency Energy Situation Declared in Ukraine

Emergency Energy Situation Declared in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ordered the expedited import of electricity and additional energy equipment as Ukraine faces its most severe wartime energy crisis. The government has declared a state of emergency in the energy sector, as the system, damaged by constant Russian strikes, meets only 60% of electricity needs. The situation is exacerbated by unseasonably low temperatures.

“All decisions have already been made, and the increase in imports must occur without delay,” Zelensky stated in a post on X following a meeting with government officials and senior military personnel.

The Ministry of Energy has reported that scheduled electricity outages are now in effect across most regions. The situation is particularly dire in the capital city of Kyiv and surrounding areas, where residents are facing prolonged power outages, and dozens of residential buildings have been left without heating as temperatures have dropped to 16 degrees Celsius (3 degrees Fahrenheit).
