Man to Receive Pig Organs for Transplantation: New Project in Russia
By 2030, a genetically modified pig could be developed in Russia, with organs suitable for transplantation in humans. This will be the first project of its kind in the country and will help address the critical shortage of donor organs. This was stated to TASS by Edward Chuyko, the executive director of M-Genomics in Novosibirsk and the project leader.
“Creating such an animal could take three to four years. We are lagging behind the global leaders in this field, but with the necessary funding, we can achieve results by finding an optimal solution,” the scientist stated.
The genetically modified pigs are expected to be bred in sterile conditions under constant veterinary and medical supervision, ensuring the ideal quality of organs for transplantation. In the first year, the project could provide approximately 200 kidneys for human surgeries. These surgical interventions are planned to be included in mandatory health insurance programs.
It is noted that in further phases, the program is expected to expand to include heart, pancreas, and liver transplantation directions.
