Vardan Ghukasyan's Health at Risk Under Detention Conditions, Lawyer Says

The Mayor of Gyumri, Vardan Ghukasyan, was transferred to a hospital on January 7. In an interview with Aysor.am, his lawyer Aramais Hayrapetyan stated that they have always highlighted that Ghukasyan has health issues.

“The court has granted the defense's motion and appointed a forensic medical examination to ascertain both the nature of the illnesses and their compatibility with detention. Currently, Mr. Ghukasyan has been moved to the hospital for examinations in the context of these issues,” the lawyer said.

He noted that the results are still unclear and will be announced as soon as they are available. According to the lawyer, the conditions in the detention facility are not compatible with Vardan Ghukasyan's health status.

“An alternative would be house arrest, bail, or administrative supervision; that is already the second aspect of the issue. We hope to have the medical center's responses within a week,” the lawyer added.
