Information Regarding New Constitution Spread by OdaTV is False, Ministry of Justice
The Ministry of Justice reports that the information published by OdaTV regarding a "historic decision" being made and the Armenian people exiting the Constitution is completely false and does not correspond to reality.
On the news website of OdaTV, an article was published claiming that a "historic decision" is to be reached and the "Armenian people" are exiting the Constitution. Without addressing each point of the publication individually, we state that the publication concerning the New Constitution is entirely false and does not reflect the truth. The information presented distorts the potential changes to the New Constitution.
Dear citizens, considering that the process of drafting the new Constitution is being conducted by the Ministry of Justice, we clarify all the details of the process. Currently, the Council on Constitutional Reforms is in operation, consisting of representatives from the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, as well as from extra-parliamentary forces and civil society organizations. The Council is led by Minister of Justice Surbhi Galayan. The Council works in a coordinated and meticulous manner, discussing proposed changes in every chapter of the Constitution.
The aim is to ensure that each proposed amendment is well-founded, taking into account expert opinions, as well as a broad perspective of public and political interests. We inform you that the discussions, proposals, and decisions made by the Council do not yet constitute the text of the new Constitution. Everything depends on the people's final decision, which will take place through a referendum. Any change to the Constitution will only be made if the issue of adopting the new Constitution is confirmed by a referendum. This process reflects the adherence to democratic principles of the Republic of Armenia and emphasizes that the final word belongs solely to the people.
The Ministry of Justice calls on the media and the public to rely on official information and refrain from unfounded assumptions, as the process of reforms for the new Constitution is open and in sight of everyone. It should be noted that the text of the new Constitution will be submitted for a referendum after the nationwide elections. The Ministry of Justice conducts awareness on the sessions and topics discussed by the Council on Constitutional Reforms. Once again, we urge everyone to follow only the official statements published by the Ministry.
