Estonia Plans to Complete Border Fence with Russia

The Estonian authorities intend to complete the construction of all border infrastructure along the eastern border with Russia by the end of 2027. This was announced by the Deputy Director of the Estonian Police and Border Guard, Veiko Kommusaar, who noted that the project is being implemented in phases.

According to him, construction has already been completed on sections of the land border where work was planned for 2025. In 2026, the installation of fencing is also planned for areas where such work was not initially included in the project.

Additionally, the police and border guard will continue developing border monitoring infrastructure along the Narva River. Alongside the five observation points already constructed, the construction of another nine new positions with the necessary technical equipment is currently underway.

At the same time, some of the fortification works along the border with Russia have been postponed. The construction of the first five bunkers of the Baltic Defensive Line began only in December 2024, whereas they were originally scheduled for completion in the fall of 2025. According to the Estonian Center for Defense Investments, the clarification of deadlines has been complicated due to issues related to organizing the competition.

The total length of the Estonia-Russia border is 338 kilometers, but the border between the two countries has not yet been fully delineated legally. Agreements on border delimitation were signed in 2014 but have not yet been ratified.
