We Need Greenland for National Security: Trump

The United States "must" control Greenland, stated President Donald Trump in a phone interview with The Atlantic amid military operations in Venezuela.

“We definitely need Greenland. We need it for defense,” he said.

According to the White House, the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark, is “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships.”

Stephen Miller's wife, Katie Miller, posted an image of a map of Greenland colored in American flag colors on social media, captioning it: “Soon.”

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen responded by emphasizing that Greenland is not for sale and that its future “is not determined by social media posts.” He added that relations between countries and peoples should be based on respect and international law, rather than “symbolic appointments” that ignore the status and rights of the territory.

In December, Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy on Greenland. In response, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen announced his intention to summon U.S. Ambassador Ken Haughery for an explanation.

Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to annex Greenland.
