Moldovan Ex-Prime Minister Put on Interpol's Wanted List
The Moldovan police have announced that former Prime Minister Vladimir Filat has been added to Interpol's wanted list following a two-year prison sentence handed down in France for money laundering, a decision that Filat previously claimed was politically motivated.
On December 22, AFP reported that a French court sentenced Filat in absentia to two years in prison and a €100,000 fine for money laundering related to a corruption case. Filat himself stated that he intends to appeal the ruling, which he considers to be politically motivated.
The spokesperson for the Moldovan police, Diana Fetko, told reporters, "The International Police Cooperation Department has been informed by Interpol's central bureau in Paris that Filat is on the wanted list for arrest."
In 2022, French authorities opened a criminal case against a villa located near Geneva that belongs to Filat's relative. According to French authorities, the building was purchased by Filat with funds obtained through corruption and large-scale money laundering.
