Greenland is an Extremely Beneficial Geostrategic Piece: Pushkov on Trump's Intentions
The desire of U.S. President Donald Trump to acquire Greenland stems from his intention to gain direct access to the Northern Sea Route, which is becoming increasingly significant for Russia and China. This was stated by Alexei Pushkov, head of the Information Policy and Media Relations Committee of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, on his Telegram channel.
He noted that while the topic of Greenland joining the United States is less discussed, Donald Trump has not forgotten about it. “It is no coincidence that alarm bells are regularly sounding in Copenhagen. Greenland provides direct access to the Northern Sea Route, which is becoming crucial for Russia and China. According to Trump’s hyperrealism, Greenland is an extremely advantageous geostrategic piece to maintain the status quo and leave insignificant Denmark entirely behind,” wrote Pushkov.
On December 22, Trump announced the appointment of Louisiana Republican Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy for Greenland. Landry thanked Trump for the appointment and confirmed the country’s intention to acquire the island. Later, Trump explained that Greenland is necessary for the United States to ensure its national security.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen expressed regret over the U.S. desire to acquire the island, while Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that an assault by the U.S. on Greenland would be equivalent to an assault on all of Denmark. Earlier, Denmark threatened to “buy several states” in response to Trump’s Greenland plans.
