Exhibition Opens in Hong Kong Dedicated to the Character Labubu

The character Labubu, a toothy elf created by Hong Kong artist and writer Kasing Lung (Lung Chih-Sheng), is celebrating its 10th anniversary. To mark this occasion, the exhibition "Monsters by Monsters: Now and Then" has opened at the Asia Society Center in Hong Kong, showcasing Labubu along with other characters by the author.

According to one visitor at the exhibition, 2025 could be dubbed the Year of Labubu, as during this time the character has gained widespread recognition around the globe. Data indicates that, by the end of 2024, Labubu had become the most popular toy in East and Southeast Asia, and its recognition is set to expand to other regions in 2025.

Despite the character's appearance being interpreted in various ways—some find it unusual or strange—Labubu is viewed in Hong Kong as a successful representation of local culture. During festive periods, queues can be seen at sales points for the doll, which many use as an accessory.

The exhibition also features other literary and artistic characters created by Kasing Lung. He began publishing "The Monsters" story series in 2015, inspired by Scandinavian mythology. In 2019, the author collaborated with Pop Mart, leading to Labubu becoming a widely popular doll released in over 300 variations.
