Zakharova Comments on Samvel Karapetyan's Detention and the Electric Networks Issue
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commented during a press briefing on the extension of the detention of Armenian-Russian businessman Samvel Karapetyan and the situation surrounding the nationalization of the Armenia Electric Networks company.
Zakharova noted that this issue could also be directed towards the head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas. “Don’t you want to ask the same question to Kaja Kallas, who is now teaching Armenia how to live? What is her attitude towards the detention of Samvel Karapetyan? No, but I think it would be very appropriate to hear her opinion on this topic. If she knows how to improve Armenia, she should also comment on this issue. Indeed, you should send some information about who Samvel Karapetyan is and how much he has done for Armenia as a Russian citizen and businessman. Let her try to answer that question. And I will definitely respond,” said Zakharova.
According to her, the protection of the interests of Russian citizens and Russian businesses abroad is always a priority for the Russian side. “We carry out this activity exclusively in accordance with the laws and sovereignty of foreign states. In this regard, we have ensured consular access for Samvel Karapetyan through the Russian embassy in Yerevan, and we continue to monitor his situation, well-being, and the preservation of his legal rights.
In our communications with Armenian officials, raising the issue of the nationalization of the Armenia Electric Networks company, we suggest jointly seek solutions to the situation that will take into account the interests of the republic and the Russian businessman. We raise this issue, as you understand, not proactively, but we declare that this issue has been raised by the Armenian side and is actively being discussed accordingly. We also have something to say on this matter. You likely know about it, but if not, I will inform you. In this environment, other businessmen, both Russian and foreign, have become cautious in assessing the prospects of their projects in Armenia,” stated Zakharova.
