Former Head of State Security Service Arrested in Georgia
The former head of the State Security Service (SSS) of Georgia, Grigol Liluashvili, has been arrested. This was announced by the country's Chief Prosecutor, Giorgi Gvarakidze.
According to the investigation, Liluashvili is suspected of receiving bribes from various sources. Specifically, he is accused of receiving $1 million from a Turkish investor, as well as 1.5 million lari from a Georgian businessman. Furthermore, the investigation revealed that the former official received an additional bribe of $1.3 million to cover up the activities of so-called "opposition call centers."
The prosecution claims that these actions constitute serious crimes that have undermined the trust in state institutions and national security. If the charges are confirmed in court, Grigol Liluashvili faces a prison sentence of 11 to 15 years. The investigation is ongoing, and the former official's defense team has yet to make a public statement.
