Azerbaijan's Land Borders Will Not Reopen
Azerbaijan has once again extended the quarantine on its land borders, a measure that has been in place since the coronavirus pandemic. This time, the restrictions have been extended until April 1, 2026.
The decision was made to 'prevent the spread of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in the country and its potential consequences,' according to the announcement.
The continued closure of borders means that the resumption of railway communication between Baku and Tbilisi will be delayed once again. It has been five years since it has only been possible to reach Azerbaijan from neighboring Georgia by air, as the land borders are open only for cargo transport.
'The fact that our land borders have remained closed in recent years has saved us from very serious disasters. Even today, when the borders remain closed, dangerous operations are carried out, and they are being stopped. Therefore, border security will protect us from external risks,' stated Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
Azerbaijan is now the only country in the world where land borders remain closed.
