Law Enforcement Received Orders to Arrest Another Brother of the Catholicos
The law enforcement system has received a clear directive to arrest the Armenian Apostolic Church’s leader of the Diocese of Russia and New Nakhichevan, Archbishop Eghiazar Nersisyan, at the moment of his entry into Armenia and to keep him in custody. According to our information, the matter is being held in a 'wait-and-see mode' until his arrival. (Official structures have not yet issued public comments on this information).
This was reported by the newspaper 'Zhoghovurd'. According to sources from the newspaper, this circumstance may explain why Archbishop Eghiazar has not been coming to Armenia for an extended period. Supporters of the Catholicos are reportedly aware of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's possible directive and consider it a manifestation of pressure on ecclesiastical circles, especially against the backdrop of escalating relations between the state and the church.
Previously, Archbishop Eghiazar used to come to Armenia, even participating in gatherings dedicated to philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan's support, but he has not visited recently.
