Merz on the Use of Frozen Assets of Russia
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that the likelihood of successful use of Russia's frozen assets is currently assessed at '50-50'. He made these remarks during an appearance on ZDF television, addressing ongoing discussions in Europe.
Merz noted that there are serious concerns across Europe regarding the use of Russia's frozen assets. According to him, such decisions are not without risks. 'There are legal challenges and there are political challenges. I think legal hurdles can be overcome, but the political hurdles will remain,' the chancellor emphasized.
He added that these issues can only be addressed through a unified approach to form a truly clear European stance towards Russia. Merz also highlighted that Ukraine currently has funding secured for the first quarter of the year, but the situation may become critical thereafter. 'We may be forced to support Ukraine for another year or two, and we need to send a clear signal to Moscow that we are ready to do so,' he remarked.
