Tax Exemption for Electric Vehicle Importers Until February 1, Says Papoyan
The government proposes to exempt importers of electric-powered trucks from tax until 2026. This was stated by Armenia's Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan during an extraordinary session of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, where he presented the draft law on amendments to the Armenian Tax Code.
Earlier, the minister announced that businesses importing electric vehicles would also be exempt from tax for another year. This privilege will extend to large, medium, and small buses, passenger cars, motorcycles, and mopeds manufactured after 2024.
“We have fully maintained this rule and added the provision for trucks, which will take effect from February 1, 2026,” Papoyan elaborated. He noted that they have received numerous letters regarding this project, with many indicating they have already ordered vehicles produced before 2024.
“However, we hadn't announced that we would extend it, so individuals ordering vehicles understood that they would have to pay the tax. There were many questions, and we still decided to accommodate them. Now we say that those importing before February 1 will not pay the tax. That is, if vehicles from 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023 are imported before February 1, they will again be exempt from the tax,” Papoyan stated, adding that they had not planned to present such a project beforehand, thus it is a pleasant surprise for the citizens.
It is worth noting that Armenia will receive a quota of 15,000 tax-free electric vehicles for 2026. Previously, the country was granted an import quota of 8,000, with 5,000 allocated for individuals and 3,000 for dealers.
