Lithuania's Foreign Minister Proposes Border Negotiations with Belarus

Vilnius is ready to initiate negotiations with Minsk regarding the border situation at the level of special emissaries. This statement was made by Lithuania's Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys during an LRT broadcast.

“To address the issues related to border regulation, we propose dialogue at the level of Lithuania's special emissary, who will focus on this very issue,” he said.

Previously, Vilnius refrained from political-level communications with Minsk on this matter, limiting itself to inter-agency cooperation. On the night of November 20, Lithuania opened two checkpoints along its border with Belarus. These checkpoints had been closed for a month at the end of October, with the possibility of extension.

Vilnius accused Minsk of allowing meteorological balloons to enter the Baltic republic. Over a thousand trucks with Lithuanian registration are currently located in Belarus.

Secretary of the Security Council Alexander Wolfovich emphasized that the situation stems from Vilnius' avoidance of political-level dialogue.
