Putin Aims to Restore the USSR and Will Not Be Limited to Ukraine: Merz

The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, has warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not limit his aggressive foreign policy to Ukraine. This was reported by DW.

“Putin will not stop. And if Ukraine falls, he will not stop,” the Chancellor stated.

Merz noted that Putin is interested in “fundamental changes to borders in Europe” and the restoration of the Soviet Union within its former borders. He believes this poses a “huge threat, including a military one, to those countries that were once part of that empire.”

Therefore, the German Chancellor continued, further assistance to Ukraine and unity in Europe in strategic cooperation with Great Britain are priorities in foreign and security policy. It is also important to “maintain NATO as long as possible,” whose effectiveness has been repeatedly questioned by U.S. President Donald Trump.
