German Politicians Oppose Conscription

German politician Sahra Wagenknecht has called for a halt to the modernization of military service in Germany during a session of the Bundesrat (Federal Council) and hopes to receive support from the Left Party and the Greens.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced yesterday that he does not rule out the restoration of conscription in the coming years. He also expressed regret that the country's constitution does not provide for mandatory military service for women, and in this context, he defended the reinstatement of a mandatory alternative civil service.

“The draft law on military service could still be stopped. Governments led by Sahra Wagenknecht's 'Alliance of Reason and Justice' (SWJ), the Left, or the Greens hold a majority in the Bundesrat. We urge the left and the greens not to retreat but to reject the conscription in the Bundesrat,” Wagenknecht wrote on the X social media platform.
