US Plans to Ease Sanctions Against Belarus
The United States has announced its intention to lift sanctions imposed on Belarusian potash producers, which is seen as another sign of potential warming relations between Washington and Minsk. This was reported by the Associated Press.
It is noted that the U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus, John Cole, is scheduled to visit the Belarusian capital, Minsk, where he will meet with the country's leader, Alexander Lukashenko.
Belarus, considered a close ally of Russia, has been under Western isolation and multiple sanctions for many years. The country, with a population of about 9.5 million, has been led by Alexander Lukashenko for over three decades in a system of concentrated power.
Western countries have imposed sanctions on Belarus for both human rights violations and for allowing Moscow to use its territory for the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
