European Commission Needs Broader Authority in Defense Matters: Kallas
The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, stated in the European Parliament that the European Commission requires broader authority in defense issues.
“We just had a meeting of EU defense ministers, and I really want to have more of such meetings because they need to change their mindset from a national approach to a European one, as other sector ministers have done. We have proposed capability coalitions that should be led by member states, but we can assist them in coordinating their efforts and participating in joint procurements and projects, as some types of weapons and capabilities are too large for individual countries to acquire independently. We are working in this direction,” she said during discussions in the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs.
