Which Are the Poorest Regions of Armenia: Hetq

The poorest region in Armenia is Shirak, where 43% of the population lives in poverty. Next is Tavush, with a poverty rate of 39.9%. This is reported by Hetq.

The Statistical Committee recently published the report titled "The Picture of Poverty in Armenia 2024." In general, the average poverty rate in Armenia is 21.7%, with extreme poverty at 0.6%. A citizen is considered poor if their monthly consumption does not exceed 53,420 AMD, while extreme poverty is defined as monthly consumption of 29,196 AMD.

The poverty rate is also high in Vayots Dzor, Gegharkunik, Armavir, and Kotayk. The lowest poverty rates are recorded in Aragatsotn and Syunik.

On average, larger families are poorer. Although the overall poverty rate in Armenia is 21.7% as of 2024, it varies according to the number of family members. Typically, families with five or more members have a higher poverty rate. For instance, the poverty rate among families with six members is 27.4%, while for families with seven or more members, it stands at 39%.

Elementary and lower education levels correlate with higher poverty rates. The statistics were calculated based on the education levels of individuals aged 16 and above. It was found that the poverty rate among those with elementary or lower education is the highest at 32.8%. Furthermore, those with incomplete secondary education also exhibit relatively high poverty rates at 28.1%. The higher the education level, the lower the poverty rate.
